Andy's Voiceover
"Smoke alarms are one of the simplest and most effective inventions. They watch over us. They can sense things we can't. They alert us when something's not right. Trouble is, they only work if we're paying attention. To effectively fight any fire, you face it head on. You look it in the eye. You don't let it scare you. But what do you do when you're going in blind? Our protocol says follow the rules, hug the wall, think it through. Find your anchor. Let that guide you. But sometimes, your instincts are all you've got. You better use them if you wanna get out alive."

Vic in this episode

Andy has her team do air-consumption drills and pairs Vic with Ben which doesn't sit right with her. She doesn't want to look bad in front of Battalion Chief Frankel because of a rookie. To Vic's annoyance, Ben runs out of air before they can finish their run while she still has half a tank left. They get called to Tuck's, Ben's son, school and Andy orders Vic and Ben to sweep the school. Inside, Vic turns off the alarm and they find Tuck and follow him into the bathroom where they find a pregnant student, Ava, who is in labor. Vic exams Ava, she is fully dilated and is about to give birth. When Ava panics Vic helps her to calm down by singing "I'm a little teapot" which always helps her to calm down and relax. Ava delivers the baby but it's still inside the amniotic sac. Ben and Vic work together and the baby comes to life. Later back at the station, Vic criticizes Andy about sending away the Aid Car. They get a call in the middle of the night, an overturned tanker. Vic and Ben are paired off again to help the victim. They realize too late that it's an ethanol fire. Vic and Ben are stuck with no protection. When her boot starts to melt, Ben realizes that Vic is panicking and helps her by doing the teapot dance with her. The others get to them just in time and save all three of them. Back at the station, everyone is talking about experiencing "blue fire" and Vic walks off. Ben follows her and she tells him that this was the closest she had ever gotten and how it could have been it for them. Vic is visibly shaken by it.

Quotes from this episode

Ben: Hold on. You still have half a tank left.
Vic: Yes, I do.
Ben: How do you regulate your air so well? What -- What's the trick?
Vic: I don't know. Being awesome?
Vic: She looks fully dialted. We're on the express train. Watch and learn, Warren. I've delivered a lot of little critters on this job. I've seen it all.
Vic: Okay, little tea pot! Okay, this is gonna sound really weird, but ... when you sing it, it'll distract your brain or something, and I'm telling you, you can do ridiculous things. Okay, this morning, I -- I stretched my oxygen tank to almost double its time.
Ben: That's your trick?
Vic: I don't know why it works. It just does. [they all start singing]
Vic: So, out of curiosity, why did you send the Aid Car away today?
Andy: It was a false alarm. I mean, it -- it's protocol. Send the rigs where they can help the most people.
Vic: Yeah, but you kind of jumped the gun on that, though, didn't you? Considering your protocol left us delivering a baby on a bathroom floor.
Andy: Excuse me?
Vic: Don't sweat it. A lot of people get first-day jitters.
Vic: [muffled] For once, I agree with New Guy. Okay, y'all are keeping me up, but I'm tired.
Dean: I literally didn't understand a single word you just said.
Travis: I think she said, "You are eating me up, and I'm fire."
Vic: Mnh-mnh.
Travis: Which doesn't make any sense.
Vic: I grind my teeth, okay?! Big deal! So I'm a grinder. I --
Travis: I am learning so much about you right now.
Dean: You don't see me grabbing your phone when you want to order takeout. If you know what I mean.
Travis: Yeah, I know what you mean.
Dean: I mean stir-fry sex.
Travis: I said I got it!
Vic: [muffled] Stir-fry what?
Ben: Okay. Can we all just go to sleep while we actually have time to go to sleep?
Vic: [muffled] He's a big baby.
Ben: Did you just call me Slim Shady?
Ben: Hey. So, um, thank you for getting that damn teapot song stuck in my head.
Vic: We did face death.
Ben: Yeah. [chuckles]
Vic: I've never gotten that close before. Knowing ... it could all be over right then ...
