Andy's Voiceover
"There's a thing we do in firefighting called reading smoke. You watch the smoke billow in and out, dance around, and study every puff, every wisp. You have to understand how the smoke moves if you want to contain the fire beneath it. Because a lack of containment in our line of work is a recipe for disaster. I know the name makes it sound like we're fighting fires, but that's not it. Really, we're conquering them. But you can't conquer what you can't control. So we use tricks and tools. We talk ourselves into believing we've got this, that fire isn't bigger than us. We've got this. Contain the flame and control it, because if we don't, that fire will just spread all over the damn place."

Vic in this episode

Station 19 is on a call to evacuate a building and vent the roof. When Ben's hook gets stuck in the roof and Vic helps him to unhook it there is a flareup which startles Vic. Later, we see Vic, Maya and Andy hang out at Andy's place, drinking and talking about the job and Frankel and how she paved the way for them. When Ryan approaches and Vic calls him chiseled, Maya tells her that Andy and him hooked up and they don't double dip. Vic is proud of Andy and wants details. Back at the station, they get a medical call and Ben notices how happy Vic is about a call with no fire involved. They manage to save the kids. On their way back to the station, Vic admits that Jack kicked ass during the call which doesn't sit well with Andy who herself has to admit that he did well. At the very end of the episode, Ben and Vic share a moment when he tells her that he doesn't like the lack of follow-up with the patients they save. Vic tells him it's better that way and goes to bed.

Quotes from this episode

Vic: [chuckles] Beer. That's cute. I brought Vodka.
Maya: Pause. For a toast to your first day as captain and one hell of a first shift. You murdered it.
Vic: I will day-drink to that.
Andy: Frankel didn't see it that way.
Maya: Well, Frankel doesn't pay compliments because she never got them. She had it tough coming up.
Andy: Yeah, and she thinks I didn't.
Vic: You didn't. Well, not like her. None of us did, partly thanks to her.
Andy: True. And that's true. To Frankel.
Maya: To Andy.
Vic: To vodka.
Maya: Day-drinking is a good first step, but you need to treat yourself.
Andy: Yeah, I-I was thinking I might head out to Gold Bar and get in a good rock climb.
Vic: Your treats and my treats are not the same.
Andy: I like to climb. It -- It gets me out of my head. Maya, you run all the time.
Maya: That is self-discipline not self-care.
Vic: And what is your self-care?
Maya: Oh, lots and lots of sex.
Vic: Yes, I highly recommend it. New lady on the horizon? Spill.
Maya: More like a series of ladies and gents. Monogamy is for the weak. Or the very, very dedicated.
Vic: Mm. A man with a badge approaching. And it might be the vodka talking, but he looks very chiseled in the daylight...
Maya: Uh, slow your roll, Hughes. We don't double dip.
Vic: Double dip? Who dipped? Oh. Herrera. Okay. Respect. I'm gonna need details. Specific and elaborate details!
Vic: Hmm. He looks just as good walking away. Well-dipped, Herrera. Well-dipped.
Andy: Montgomery thinks I'm too green to make a good captain.
Vic: Please. That is ridiculous.
Maya: What does he know? Experience isn't everything.
Vic: Yeah, he's green. Like a-a booger. Jack did kick ass today. Well, I'm s-- Okay, we were all thinking it.
Vic: You look like you need to talk. I'll listen, but I am... very tired, so don't get offended if I fall asleep.
Vic: Because, unlike you, I don't have a soft underbelly. It's a crunchy candy shell. Can't crack this.
