Andy's Voiceover
"People call us heroes. But if you ask any firefighter, we're the first to say, "No, we're not heroes. We're not super human. We're just regular people. We have flaws. We have fears. We just show up every day and do our job." That's it. It doesn't make us heroes. Somebody has to. It's not about being a hero. It's about facing fears. It's about finding strength. It's about going where you're needed. It's about making the hardest decisions in the worst of circumstances. It's about seeing the whole picture. It's about knowing how to follow and how to lead. It's not about us. I told you, we're just doing what has to be done. Somebody has to."

Vic in this episode

Vic wonders why Ripley chose their station for the interviews and tells Andy and Maya that she doesn't like all the other firefighters being there up in their business. Maya agrees and Andy calls her out on not minding it last night. Vic has obviously missed something and wants to know what. Maya changes the subject and Vic doesn't like Andy's attitude about the captain race and her resignation. She tries to convince her that she still has a chance. Later, when the team congratulates Ben on surviving 50 fires he wonders how they knew about him passing his driver's test and Travis spills that Vic figured out his e-mail password. Vic shares it with the rest of the team. There is a call about a fire at a skyscraper but Station 19 doesn't get called in yet. Maya wants to get in there but Vic is happy if they don't have to. They finally get the call late in the evening. At the skyscraper, Maya volunteers herself and Vic for floor 28 where there is no fire. Vic is grateful for that. While they check for smoke, Vic tells Maya that she feels that if she doesn't get her fear under control that Jack won't be the only one leaving. Vic and Maya get instructions to prepare for evacuation but the fire jumps floors. Vic saves Maya's life just in time. When she stares at the fire that is surrounding them Maya wonders if she is okay. Vic assures her that she is more than just okay. She instructs Maya to take care of the civilians while she hooks a hose to the pipe and clears a path to the stairwell obviously no longer afraid of the fire.

Quotes from this episode

Vic: Hey, why is Ripley holding all the interviews with the captain wannabes here? I don't like the idea of all the other candidates being in our space, all up in our business.
Maya: Me either.
Andy: You didn't seem to mind too much last night.
Maya: I told you, I didn't know who she was!
Vic: Wait. Hang on. Did I just miss something? What did I just miss?
Maya: Okay. What are you gonna say in your meeting today, if you've decided you've already lost this thing?
Vic: What? No! No, no, no. Wrong attitude. Don't think that.
Andy: I'm just gonna be true to myself, all right? That's all I can do.
Vic: Okay, hey. I'm sensing some resignation here, and I don't like it. The Incinerator may have been bad, but that doesn't mean you're completely out of the running. Why would you think that way?
Andy: You know, just a hunch, I guess.
Vic: Grant, did you wake up at his place? 'Cause, if so, that is huge. He never lets anybody sleep over.
Vic: Well, I think it's great. And I'm anxiously waiting for my invitation to come be a third wheel at any one of your gourmet-cooked meals.
Vic: I mean, I'd seen, like 50 fires in probably half the time.
Ben: Okay, how did you all even know that I passed my driving test?
Travis: We're family. We keep track of stuff like that. Also, Vic might've figured out how to crack your e-mail password.
Vic: It's "HotHotMiranda," if anyone's curious.
Ben: I'll be changing that today.
Vic: He'll regret starting over from scratch at some lame, brand-new station with lame brand-new people. And guess who's not lame? Us.
Vic: If he leaves can I have his locker?
Molly: Oh, see, it's in Section 3 of my coordinator manual.
Vic: She's a mini Herrera.
Vic: Thank you, by the way, for volunteering us for the floor with no fire.
Maya: Are any of the drills helping?
Vic: I think I see an improvement, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. You know, that thing with Jack leaving the station, if I don't get over my fear soon, that'll be me, too. I'll have to quit.
Maya: You'll get over your fear.
Vic: Haven't yet.
Maya: Vic. Vic.
Vic: Get everyone out safe. I'll hook a hose to the pipe and knock a path out to the stairwell.
Maya: Are you sure?
Vic: More than sure. I'm good. I'm freaking great, actually. I got this.
