Andy's Voiceover
"Sometimes, we set fires on purpose. It's called a controlled burn. We light the match, then let the fire ignite and build, bigger and brighter. And even though we could put it out, we don't. We wait, we let the heat devour everything in its path. Because sometimes, you just have to burn all the trees to the ground if you want them to grow again. Some fires are harder to put out than others, even when we're the ones who've started them. We can light the match. We can fan the flames. But we can't always control what the fire does, where the fire goes, or how damn hot it's gonna burn."

Vic in this episode

Vic and Travis at the station's gym and discussing his relationship with Grant and how there is no "spice" there anymore. The flee when Sullivan comes in and starts boxing aggressively. They warn the others that Sullivan is in a mood and Jack approaches them and tells them he wants to throw a surprise birthday party for Dean. Vic doesn't want to hear any of it since she is bad at keeping secrets. So stuffs her mouth with a muffin when Dean comes in. She caves and ends up spilling Jack's plan. When Chief Ripley comes in, Vic acts slightly weird around him and he is amused. Later, Andy notices Ripley waving at Vic and wonders what that is about. Vic tells her it's what people do to greet each other. She notices that Ryan is trying to catch Andy's attention. The rest of the day is spend with showing the SPD how to do apply first aid. Vic notices Jack and Maya flirting with the same girl, so she decides to take bets on who gets her number first. Later in the evening, Vic is in the kitchen getting the cake for Dean and Ripley is there too. They flirt. They continue to flirt on the roof while "not" celebrating Dean's birthday and we see them in bed together at the end of the episode.

Quotes from this episode

Vic: So, you were trying to spice things back up with a frittata.
Travis: Okay, isn't that the universal equation?
Vic: Is it?
Travis: Breakfast plus bed equals sex in that bed, yes.
Vic: You know, in your house [chuckling] maybe.
Travis: Besides, there's nothing to spice back up. We were taking things slow, and then I got hurt, and we kind of skipped spice.
Vic: You skipped spice? You can't skip beginning-of-relationship spice. It's the best of the spices. Okay, see, this is what happens when I'm out of your life for too long. You do crazy things like not have hot, round-the-clock sex with your gorgeous boyfriend. It's a c -- It's a crime.
Travis: Stop it.
Vic: You stop it.
Vic: Nope, okay. Nope, nope. Not hearing this.
Jack: What? Come on.
Vic: Actively un-hearing this. No, I'm really sort of extremely terribly bad at secrets, so...
Dean: Vic's got a secret. Uh-huh. I give it about five minutes. [breathes sharply] All right, yeah.
Vic: [muffled] Happy Birthday, Miller.
Dean: What?
Vic: Jack's throwing a surprise birthday party to celebrate.
Jack: Vic!
Vic: I'm sorry! I'm sorry!
Dean: Come on, man. Like, I thought I was clear. Look, guys, I don't want to make my birthday a thing, okay? Okay? Can we --
Ripley: Miller. I had no idea. Happy Birthday.
Dean: [laughs] Thank you, sir.
Vic: Chief Ripley, hello.
Ripley: [chuckles]
Andy: Did Ripley just wave at you?
Vic: Yeah, so? It's a traditional form of greeting. People wave.
Andy: They do. I just didn't realize you and Ripley were waving buddies. But I guess, uh, today's a day full of surprises, so...
Vic: Don't look now, but Tanner's trying to catch your eye. What kind of buddies are you two these days?
Andy: Buddy buddies who don't talk or see each other... or know how to act around each other, actually.
Vic: Have you tried waving? It works.
Vic: Hey, did I, um -- Did I tell you that Ripley was at that therapy thing I went to after last shift? He's very different outside of work. He wears sweaters. I never saw him as a sweater guy. Blazers for sure, but...
Ryan: Shouldn't this thing have beeped by now?
Vic: Just keep pumping, Tanner.
Andy: What's going on over there?
Vic: Well, when two people that attractive want to get sweaty together, sometimes they simply can't be stopped.
Andy: Oh. You think Jack wants to get sweaty with that girl?
Vic: I thought Bishop wanted to get sweaty.
Ryan: 5 bucks on Bishop. Actually, 10 bucks.
Andy: Did your dummy beep?
Vic: No, see, that is a tough call. Jack's got the hair, but Maya reads books. Nope, got a hair flip. 10 bucks on Gibson.
Vic: Yeah, just give him some... some firefighter spice. Pshhh. Whee.
Travis: What do you -- What do you mean, like role-play?
Dean: $20 on Bishop, and... can you spot me some cash?
Travis: What?
Dean: What? You know I'm good for it.
Travis: I don't know that, actually. I don't know that.
Vic: It's his birthday, man.
Vic: I'm surprised you stuck around for the, um -- the whole training session. You just like it that much here? [chuckles] I mean, o-overall, we are pretty likeable.
Ripley: No. It's my job to visit all the stations. So it's more, uh... It's more that I like my job.
Vic: Oh, right, duh, obviously.
Ripley: I do like 19, though. I like the energy here. Of course, I, uh... I like the people.
Vic: Spice.
Ripley: Excuse me?
Vic: What? No. Oh, nothing. No, I wasn't -- Just, uh -- oh, what'd you say?
Ripley: I didn't say anything.
Vic: Me neither.
Ripley: No?
Vic: No. Mm.
Ripley: Huh. Okay.
Vic: Okay.
Vic: I'll cut, you serve?
Ripley: Oh, okay. Sure, happy to.
Vic: What -- you thought I was gonna invite you up here and not [laughing] put you to work? You got to work for your cake.
Ripley: Like I said, happy to.
