Andy's Voiceover
"The tiniest spark can start a fire like a chain reaction. Sometimes you want to let that spark catch so the fire grows. And sometimes, you'd better just put it out. Because fire is contagious. It can spread like a disease. And if you're not careful, it'll infect everything. Sometimes you might think you can contain a spark, but what if you lose control of the spark? What if that spark catches fire and erupts? If you're not careful, it'll burn your whole world down."

Vic in this episode

Vic's shift is over and she is on her way out when Andy finds her and starts talking about her dad selling her childhood home. They stumble upon Kathleen, a cadet from the fire academy who was checking out 19 to see if it's a good fit for her. Vic and Andy end up showing her around the station and giving her tips about the job that could be useful. Later that day, the girls meet up with the guys at a bar.

Quotes from this episode

Andy: My dad keeps texting me about buyers for his house in all caps with no punctuation. He wants me to come over and weed through them with him. I don't want to weed.
Vic: "Hi, Andy, this is your father. A man with three earrings and a tiny puppy is offering all cash. I said no on principle. Tiny puppies are weird."
Andy: What?
Vic: And your dad has a Bitmoji.
Andy: Um, can we help you?
Kat: No, I'm all good. Thanks!
Vic: Uh, actually, you're not. You're technically trespassing.
Kat: Oh. Sorry, I wasn't trying to... You guys think I'm creepy now, like I just wandered in all quiet and unannounced, and now I'm leaving. You guys had no idea that I was here.
Andy: Um, well, didn't you?
Kat: Let me start over. I'm Kathleen. Kat for short. I'm a cadet at the Fire Academy. I was just stopping by to check out the place. I'm checking out all the stations just to see where I might fit in, you know? Assuming I graduate.
Andy: Well, most graduates do want to come here.
Vic: Obviously, we're awesome, so...
Kat: No, I mean, yeah. This place is great. I just don't think this place is for me, though. Good meeting you.
Andy: Whoa, wait, whoa. What do you mean not for you?
Vic: You may not know this, but 19 is, like...
Kat: Legendary. I know. I'm just trying to be realistic here. The guys in my class, uh, they're -- they're so good.
Andy: Everyone gets a little intimidated during training. But if you want to be the best, you got to... You got to play with the best. Come on. I am giving you a real tour.
Vic: You know you're just distracting yourself with more work so you don't have to go deal with your dad.
Andy: No. I'm going to inspire a fresh, young mind to embrace her fierce inner bad-ass competitor self. So I don't have to go deal with my dad.
Vic: Okay.
Andy: What -- What happened there?
Kat: I hurt myself in a drill. I patched it up myself.
Vic: You did a pretty lousy job of it.
Kat: Yeah, I'd like to see how well you'd do with one good arm, gauze and a hand mirror.
Vic: Why not have somebody at the Academy patch it up properly?
Andy: Uh, let me take a guess. You didn't want any of the guys in your class to see that you got hurt. Have they been busting your chops?
Kat: No, no, it's not like that. They... They treat me like an equal.
Andy: Yeah, but you got to be twice as good to be respected half as much.
Vic: Girl, we've been there.
Kat: I just keep screwing up. Dropping things, not even heavy things. But I'm working on my own all the time. More push-ups, more muscle training, more everything. But I just don't think I'm improving.
Andy: We know what you need. Rice.
Kat: Rice?
Andy: Rice.
Vic: Rice.
Andy: What you need is a different kind of strength.
Kat: This is surprisingly hard.
Vic: Grip strength's essential.
Kat: So, what else you go? I mean, you clearly have insider tips.
Andy: You're gonna want to distinguish yourself. Me? I read smoke.
Vic: I kick ass.
Andy: She can also regulate her O2 intake better than anyone I've ever met. Is there really nobody passing thsi stuff on to you at the Academy?
Kat: Are you kidding? No. You know, what's funny is, um, I never even thought about becoming a firefighter.
Andy: What changed your mind?
Kat: Living in a windowless cubicle, writing mindless code for dating apps. Until the building where I worked caught fire a few months back, and, you know, seeing the firefighters running upstairs while I was running down... All I know is, I wanted to be the one heading in, not out. Applied to the Academy the next day.
Andy: Was it a big fire, or...?
Kat: Oh, yeah, he big Barclay Skyscraper downtown.
Andy: Oh, wow. Okay.
Vic: We were there, too.
Kat: That was you? You guys inspired me to change my whole life. And now I'm here. Like, I've come back to you for help without even realizing it.
Vic: Aww. We're like her firefighter Sherpas, guiding her to her destiny.
Andy: It's really not like that at all.
Vic: No, we are her Yoda. She's our Padawan.
Andy: I don't know what that means, and I don't know that I want to be that.
Vic: Just keep opening and closing your fist till it burns. Good. Be at one with your rice.
Vic: Maybe you should take your own advice.
Andy: Meaning?
Vic: Well, you told Kat over there that she needed to work on a different kind of strength to fix her problem. Maybe you should do the same. I know your dad's move is stirring up all kinds of dust for you. But isn't that when people like us gear up and charge into the smoky building anyway?
