The light may go out and leave you in the dark. Firefighters are taught to find our way in the dark. Keep one hand on the wall, at all times. Let it guid you. Don't let the dark daunt you. Stay calm. Move forward. There's always a way. So when you find your path through the darkness. When you step out into the light. Take a breath, let you eyes adjust and see what you see."

Vic in this episode

Vic is having dinner with the rest of her team and they are talking about Pruitt's Hawaii vacation and Dean's dating deal with his mother. Later, Vic stumbles upon her boyfriend Ripley. He talks about them going on vacation but she tells him that's impossible with them being a secret and all that. They flirt and when the power goes out, Vic takes the opportunity and they start making out. Vic walks away, leaving him breathless once the power is back on. They get a call and the whole block is out of power. They have to find a little girl that went missing. They split up and Vic, Travis and Ben help a daughter Mila with her father Elliot who has stage 4 cancer. Travis and Ben get into each others hair over the treatment of the patient while Vic tries to help and play referee between them. In the end, the dad has his daughter sign an DNR and all five of them go outside to stargaze, like Elliot and Mila used to do when she was little. Elliot dies. It stays with Vic. When she comes home, Ripley is lying in her bed waiting for her. She joins him and tells him about her day and Elliot and says that they should go on vacation. Ripley agrees but then Vic talks them out of it because they are still a secret and it just won't work. Ripley tells her that maybe they shouldn't be a secret anymore. Vic smiles and they kiss.

Quotes from this episode

Vic: What is all this?
Andy: Oh, my dad got Lei'd. [laid ]
Ben: [ laughs ] She -- She, uh -- She means a necklace. You know, of -- of flowers.
Pruitt: The trip was a very spontaneous decision... One I do not regret.
Maya: I'm all for spontaneous!
Pruitt: Miller. Aloha.
Vic: What's wrong with you?
Dean: I can't do it anymore. My mother's list of possible dates is endless. How does she know this many people? How does she persuade them all to go on these dates? It's like waterboarding. But with small-talk and twinkly lights.
Vic: I don't think you understand what waterboarding is...
Tuck: I don't either. What is it?
Vic: Uh...
Ben: [ chuckles ] Hey, what -- You want one of these now, actually?
Dean: I am exhausted. I need it to stop.
Andy: Can't you just make it stop by saying, Mom, I am stopping this now.
Jack: Mm. Yeah. You haven't met Dean's mom.
Dean: It's all or nothing with her. We struck a deal. Now, either I hold up my end of the bargain, or... there -- there is no "or."
Vic: Sounds like the only way to win is to bring home a living, breathing girlfriend, on the list, or not. I-If your mom's that by the books, she's not gonna encourage you to cheat, right?
Vic: [ gasps ] Captain Herrera Aloha'd you, too?
Ripley: Yeah. Seems like he had an amazing time. [ whispering ] You know what? Maybe you and I should try to get away somewhere...
Vic: [ whispering ] Oh, right. Like that's a possibility given work, plus secrecy, plus all the other strings involved.
Ripley: I know. You're right.
Vic: But we could take a fake vacation, in our brains.
Ripley: To...Colorado? - Or Vancouver. [ gasps ] We could get a little ski chalet. With a fireplace --
Vic: I'm sorry. In your fantasy, you want me in a snowsuit? There are things called beaches. And swimwear.
Ripley: You'd look sexy in a snowsuit.
Vic: Okay, just so you know, in my fantasy, you're shirtless. All the time.
Ripley: Oh yeah?
Vic: Oh definitely yeah. [ both chuckle ]
Vic: Morning.
Ripley: Long day?
Vic: Ooh, long night. New fantasy vacation idea -- Someplace with a bed.
Ripley: Let's do it.
Vic: [ chuckles ] I wish you could've met this guy BB I met on my call today. He was a master of fantasy scenarios. [ laughs ] But, in the end, I think reality turned out a lot better for him. Life's too short. No more fantasizing. Let's take a vacation. For real. Sun, snow, bed, it doesn't -- it doesn't matter. I don't want to put things off -- Okay. Okay, I can see the look on your face. I know, it's not realistic, but --
Ripley: I was going to say... I've got vacation days. And I don't want to be the guy who never uses them.
Vic: Really?
Ripley: Sure.
Vic: Okay. Okay, okay. So, we take the days off, and then what? We can't tell people, so... how will that work, can we make that work? Okay, so, we can't -- we can't take the time without telling people why, and we can't tell people why without outing our secret, and doing that messes with careers, and jobs, so... Forget it. Forget it. [ smooches ] Back to fantasy vacation, I guess. [ sighs ]
Ripley: If this secret is what's holding us back, then maybe... [ sighs ] ...maybe we shouldn't be a secret anymore?
